Glass Coffee Table DIY

When I found this table I was so excited. I loved the size, the brass, the details....and the glass top. Of course the kiddos quickly showed me that this was not a safe option. Between the banging on the surface and crawling on the top, my husband banished the glass top to the garage. What I love about this DIY is that it is incredibly simple and not permanent. If down the road I do want to swap the glass back in I can.
I started with the frame and measured a 1/2'' thick square of plywood to replace the glass top

After a few quick easy steps this is our new "safe and sturdy" coffee table:

Mini Makeover - Family Room

There is no question that the family room is where we spend the most time. And that means that it is the most trampled and abused room. My kids jump from tables to couch cushions, from couch cushions to window sills, (they are super well behaved obviously). Point being that since they are little destroyers I don't put too much effort into this room beyond making it super comfy and child proof (which it is). I decided to challenge my kiddos, myself by elevating the style and breakables in this corner.

As soon as the kids came home, they ooh and awed at the tidy space, perfectly fluffed pillows, and made it their mission to put their stamp on things. But let's just pretend it still looks like this.

Quick Improvement: Entry Table

My "Entry Table" has gone through several transformations. On a good day it can look like this:
Enter Jack when he turned one and started climbing EVERYTHING - including this table. And this would result in the table crashing down on him and breaking/scattering all the nice decorative items on top. (and he would be just fine in case you were worried)
As a result the table has looked like this for quite a while:
And yes Jack has pulled the table and that plant down a couple times this summer. That is why it looks so sad and sorry and the poor thing needs rehab if it will ever bloom again. This weekend as I was cleaning I decided to give the table another try.
I am not entirely happy with this arrangement, but for a fifteen minute makeover while cleaning, it is a big improvement. :) Of course in reality that candle is a total fire hazard and could never be lit. But isn't that alligator candlestick cool? I was happy to bring him out of hiding.

Can you tell I need a photography lesson :) This is the best I could do with a few iPhone snaps.

Designer Crush: Kishani Perera

One reason Kishani Perera stands out to me is her designs appear very collected over time. None of her rooms look purchased - in fact almost all of them look like they have been slowly furnished by inhabitants that have been traveling the world hunting for and gathering eclectic treasures. As a result, each space is unique and beautiful. If you haven't read her book Vintage Remix, I strongly recommend it. She has a wonderful way of making pulling together looks that are current and cool.

Style Trend: Oriental Rugs

I am not a rug expert - Is the correct term Oriental, Persian or Antique ? All I know is that I love classic "Oriental" style rugs in contemporary settings. Rugs are a big investment, especially this style, but just like art they can make a room and will last forever. Antique stores, Estate Sales and eBay are a great place to find rugs like these at a discount as well as a great online store Ecarpet Gallery.

Hollywood Regency Style

I love to browse vintage decor on Etsy and the more I have done that the more I noticed the description "Hollywood Regency" popping up next to all things amazing. If you love color, faux bamboo, tufted upholstery, high-gloss lacquer, brass and feminine chinoiserie accents, you will enjoy perusing all the shopping options for this style on places like Etsy and eBay. The prices range from thrifty to high-end investment pieces. Although Hollywood Regency style is a throwback to the opulence and glamour of the 1930s, it mixes very well with contemporary design.
